You don't have to have an agent to get seen by casting directors. If they need your type for a role, and your photo crosses their desk at just the right time, there is no reason that they wouldn't pick up the phone and call you for an audition. It's really very simple.

But the only way that can happen is if you are sending them your photo. And preferably if you are sending it on a regular basis so they start to recognize you. If they start to know you as someone who has been at it for a while, they will see you are serious about your acting career, not just "giving it a shot," with no real plan to be a professional actor. Most actors, if they do their mailings to casting directors at all, stop after one time or two times and lose momentum that they have been building. To make the most of it, you need to keep mailing postcards to casting directors on a regular basis.

So where does this leave you in marketing yourself as an actor? It all comes down to this:

• You need to get Casting Directors to KNOW you. Get on the radar of as many as possible of the Casting Directors who use your type in their projects.
• You need to get Casting Directors to TRUST you. Keep contacting them on a regular basis over time so they start to become familiar with you and trust you as an actor.
• You need to get Casting Directors to LIKE you. Build your relationship with everyone who hires you or casts you and keep the momentum going by staying in touch consistently over time.
• Doing any one of these things will dramatically increase chances of getting more auditions. And doing all three is the best way to market yourself as an actor.

These casting directors keep photos of actors, child actors, models, voice talent, dancers, and music talent on file so they can contact you when they are casting your type. Even if you live outside of Los Angeles and New York City, they can audition you when they need talent in your area, or you might be right for something now and they will provide your travel to the casting call and filming locations.
